Sudden storm
a tumble of rose leaves
down the crushed-brick path.

Midnight swim
in the dunes between beer bottles
our summer clothes.

New year
finding rust gathered
in the widower’s car.

Old school rooms
the little sound of a boy
attending quietly.

Late night drinks
her flicking red hair
at his jealousy.

Dance class
then the Latin rhythms in
our long walk home.

Burnt-out neighbours
yet was their chimney
just whistling wind.

Ice-cream parlour
a passing school girl’s
sudden pirouette.

Cornfield
the scarecrow with the wind
in his long red coat.
