Poem 1068

Sundial
the white summer cloud
measuring an hour across.

Sundial garden
the owl hoots
the cat away.

Sundial garden
the afternoon heat
making the cicadas shrill.

Cold garden
on the brass sundial
a brown apple core.

Lightning flash
its time
recorded on the sundial.

In lounge-room mirror
little kneeling sisters
over their butterfly book.

Dentist’s mirror
the cavity
of so much pain.

In the mirror
the mantelpiece Buddha
lit by the moon.

Lake mirror
a frog leaps into
the face of the moon
