in extra smoke

a trilling stream
the stallion
drinks in stones

crossing
the shades of afternoon
a piebald cat

bed of stones
a quickening flash
of rainbow trout

the wolves come baying
in the deepening snows
they must feed their lives in

late night alone
my pregnancy kit
opened in the bathroom

from clouds the moon
nests of turtles leave the sand
for the sea,for the sea

campfire doused
the Universe’s
blanket of stars

each new pupil
in the ink stains
of others
